12th International Summer University “Greek Language, Culture and Media”

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure to welcome the 12th International Summer University “Greek Language, Culture and Media”, taking place this year in Sydney under the theme “The Greek Language in Australia: From Memory to the Future.”

This year’s topic addresses an issue of particular significance for the Greek diaspora: the place of the Greek language within a multilingual and multicultural society such as Australia. The Greek language has been sustained across generations through the efforts of people who migrated, built communities, founded schools, developed cultural and educational institutions, and preserved a living connection with Greece.

Today, however, the context has changed considerably. Younger generations are growing up in a different linguistic and cultural environment, where the continuity of the Greek language cannot be considered self-evident. This is why discussions on Greek-language education, the use of digital technologies, the role of communities and Universities, and the contribution of diaspora media are especially important. Language is not only linked to memory and heritage; it also provides access to an ongoing cultural tradition and a shared intellectual horizon.

For many years, the International Summer University has contributed significantly to this dialogue through the vision and dedication of its founder and Scientific Director, Dean of the School of Education. Professor Nicoletta Tsitsanoudis-Mallidis, together with all those involved in the organization. We also warmly thank Dr Vasilis Adrahtas for the organizational direction of the program in Australia.

The University of Ioannina consistently supports initiatives that strengthen the international presence of the Greek language and cultivate enduring ties with Greek communities abroad, particularly through collaborations with Universities, educational institutions, and cultural organizations worldwide.
