The International Summer University “Greek Language, Culture, and Mass Media” is being held for the eleventh year, continuing its successful course. It is an event that has already become a reference point for the ecumenical Hellenism, as it contributes, in an innovative and substantial way, to the enhancement of Greek language learning and the promotion of our cultural heritage.
Our language constitutes the foundation of our cultural identity and one of the most important means of communication for every community. For our compatriots abroad, preserving the language of their homeland is of vital importance, as it serves as a bridge connecting them to their roots, while strengthening their sense of belonging. Language helps diaspora communities maintain their traditions, history, and values, fostering, at the same time, bonds between younger generations.
In this context, the role of Diaspora Media in preserving and disseminating our language is of paramount importance. For instance, Greeks abroad stay updated on current affairs in Greece in the language of their homeland, through newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and digital platforms operated by and for diaspora communities. Thus, they maintain a strong cultural identity even in areas or social environments where their language is not widely spoken.
A significant advantage of Diaspora Media is that they also serve as a means to enhance the linguistic skills of younger generations. Children and teenagers of the Diaspora become familiar with the vocabulary and grammar of the Greek language, while developing a stronger sense of connection to their cultural heritage.
Via a diverse and in-depth program, the International Summer University highlights the multifaceted and notable role of the Diaspora Media, a role that is both informative and educative.
One of the primary goals of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to strengthen the ties between the metropolitan center and the Greek Diaspora, to foster a two-way communication, to preserve and empower Hellenism worldwide. Greek language learning is among the top strategic priorities of the Greek State.
Bearing all this in mind, we are granting our auspices yet again to the International Summer University, to this exceptional event, which has been included in the Strategic Plan for Greeks Abroad 2024-2027 of our Ministry.
I wholeheartedly congratulate the organizers of the 11th International Summer University, wishing best of luck to all your future endeavors.
Maira Myrogiani
Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy
